General Awareness — the highest-weight section

Current events of national and international importance, games and sports, art and culture of India, Indian literature, monuments and places of India.

History of India and the freedom struggle, physical, social and economic geography of India and the world, Indian polity and governance (constitution, political system).

General science up to Class 10 CBSE level, environmental issues, basics of computers, common abbreviations, transport and communication systems in India, important government programmes, and flora and fauna of India.

Railway-specific facts — zones and headquarters, first trains, recent railway projects — are asked often, so keep a separate railway GK sheet.

Mathematics

Number system, decimals, fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, mensuration, time and work, time and distance.

Simple and compound interest, profit and loss, elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometry, elementary statistics (mean, median, mode).

NTPC maths is moderate; with 1/3 negative marking, solve the arithmetic first and skip lengthy geometry if time is short.

General Intelligence & Reasoning

Analogies, completion of number and alphabet series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, similarities and differences, relationships, analytical reasoning.

Syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagrams, puzzles, data sufficiency, statement-conclusion and statement-course of action, decision making.

Maps and interpretation of graphs. Reasoning is the most scoring section — aim for near-full accuracy here.

CBAT for Station Master and Traffic Assistant

Candidates for safety-category posts take a Computer Based Aptitude Test, with a minimum T-score in each test battery required to qualify.

Merit for these posts combines CBT 2 and CBAT marks as per the weightage notified. No negative marking in CBAT.

Typing Skill Test

Clerk, accounts clerk-cum-typist and junior clerk posts require typing at 30 wpm in English or 25 wpm in Hindi on a computer, qualifying in nature.

Practise 15–20 minutes daily well before results — many candidates lose selection here despite strong CBT scores.
