UKPSC Upper Subordinate syllabus and exam pattern

The UKPSC Upper Subordinate Services examination — commonly called Uttarakhand Upper PCS — is held in three stages: an objective preliminary examination, a descriptive main examination, and a personality test. Paper counts, marks and negative marking are revised by the commission from time to time. Always confirm the current pattern, including the number of mains papers and qualifying percentages, from the latest official UKPSC notification for your attempt year.

Uttarakhand-specific content decides the result

The paper that separates selected candidates from the rest is Uttarakhand studies — Katyuri, Chand and Parmar dynasties, the Tehri state movement, the statehood movement, districts and rivers, tribes and fairs, crops, hydro projects, disaster management, the state budget and current schemes.

Treat national-level General Studies as your qualifying base and Uttarakhand as your scoring edge. A weekly rotation of history, geography, economy and current affairs of the state works better than reading one thick book end to end.

On क्रांति, the UKPSC Upper PCS hub carries state-focused notes and mock tests, including Uttarakhand history and demography, so you can test recall instead of only re-reading.

How to prepare for prelims: speed plus elimination

Prelims is objective with negative marking, so accuracy matters as much as coverage. Practise full-length papers under the clock and record how many questions you attempted versus how many you got right.

Aim to finish a General Studies paper with 15 minutes to spare so you can revisit flagged questions. The aptitude paper needs timed drills on comprehension and data interpretation rather than theory.

Do not guess blindly. If you cannot eliminate at least two options, leaving the question is usually the better decision under negative marking.

How to prepare for mains: write, don't just read

Mains is descriptive, so marks come from structure — a crisp introduction, headed body points, a state-specific example and a short conclusion.

Build a one-page note for every recurring theme (Uttarakhand migration, hydro power, tourism, disaster management, forest fires, Char Dham) that you can adapt into an answer within seven minutes.

Write at least two full-length answers a day and review them against your own notes. Also practise Hindi writing seriously — the language paper ends many candidacies.

A realistic six-month plan

Months 1–3: finish the national General Studies base and one complete pass of Uttarakhand history, geography and economy. Take one sectional mock each week.

Months 4–5: switch to full-length prelims mocks every weekend with analysis, while starting daily answer writing for the mains papers.

Month 6: revision only — your own notes, previous year questions, current affairs of the last twelve months, and repeat attempts of the mocks you scored lowest on.
